When a child is sick and everyone else is having fun...
Zichron Menachem arranges and runs Adventure Camps for kids with cancer. ZM adventure camps have become legendary for their endless fun. Since ZM was founded in 1990, it has run close to 50 different camps for kids with cancer, both in Israel and overseas. At present, ZM runs three different camps each year: winter, spring and summer. The children are taken for helicopter flights, parachute jumps, tractor rides and many other exciting activities. Celebrities and guest artists entertain the campers. Public figures and heads of state come to ZM camps to greet and encourage the children. Ten days filled with non-stop fun - from early morning until the counselors call "lights out" at night - do the utmost to help a sick child forget his fears and pain. The only thing that matters for the moment is - having a great time
ZM is top-notch at planning and operating these very special camps. Past camp attractions have included: paragliding, skiing on snow on Mount Hermon and water skiing at Israel's leading sites -- just to mention a few of ZM's fun-filled camp activities for children who are fighting cancer.
During the winter vacation (Chanukah) ZM flies cancer-stricken children from all over Israel down south to sunny Eilat for ZM's winter camp. They enjoy staying at a luxurious 5-star hotel, from where they go on excursions such as water skiing, jeep rides, scuba diving, horseback riding, sail boating and many other activities which bring much "light" to mid-winter days. These Adventure Camps re-energize and revitalize children who are in the midst of their struggle to win over their cancer.
ZM has rightfully gained an excellent reputation for its most unconventional camps for kids with cancer. A fully-equipped mobile medical unit and a staff of doctors, nurses, specially-trained volunteer counselors and program coordinators accompany the children wherever they go.
ZM Adventure Camps
ZM initiates, plans and operates Adventure Camps for kids with cancer both in Israel and overseas (in England, France and Holland - so far). Whereas ZM's winter Adventure camp is traditionally in Eilat and the spring camp takes place in the north of Israel (the Galilee and Golan Heights), when the long summer vacation arrives, the ZM kids pack their bags and get their passports ready. 120-130 children who are at the height of, or recently finished, their cancer treatments, attend each camp -- after getting their doctors' permission. Oncology doctors and nurses, equipped with a mobile hospital unit and blood products lab, travel with the children wherever they go. This fact makes it possible for ZM to take children who are seriously ill on these Adventure Camps. The camps give the children a chance to recharge their "batteries" -- both physical and emotional. ZM Adventure Camps give the children extra strength to continue their fight against cancer. When the children look back and remember the wonderful fun they had at these camps, it helps them to cope with the pain and fear that cancer may cause.
ZM Adventure Camps - their short and long-term benefits
ZM's camps function as "power stations" for children sick with cancer. These camps, in essence, empower the children over the course of the entire year -- not only during the camp session itself. The fact that a child anticipates going on each of the three annual ZM camps (in winter, spring and summer) is enough reason to motivate him to do his utmost to undergo and tolerate the often difficult side effects of his cancer treatments, as well as the disease itself. The camps are a "beacon of light" in what otherwise could be a dark world for any child who is ill with cancer. During the camp experience, the child becomes healthily "distracted", which helps him to forget his pain and fear. The camps' special activities and ultra-fun experiences, combined with the loving care and attention of the ZM staff and escorts, bring the desired result each and every time. After the end of each camp, ZM has a professional film studio edit the footage that was shot during the course of the camp. Each camper receives a souvenir copy of the film, which he can enjoy viewing and remembering how much fun he had at the ZM camp. Meanwhile, back at ZM, we are busy planning the next camp that will take place in several months' time. And the children, for their part, are busy counting the days until the next ZM camp!

The aim of the ZM fun days and outings is to offer a change in the daily routine and to enjoy a breath of "fresh air." The children, siblings and parents are given a chance to relax and have fun together. These outings help the families - all of whom are in the same difficult situation of having a child sick with cancer - connect with each other in enjoyable and happy surroundings.
